Where to begin!?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

When you’re on a mission to SAVE THE WORLD , like I am, it becomes very overwhelming to know where to begin. So I propose you start by looking at yourself – inside and out. Big changes need to be made and the small step toward progress begins with you. Just follow my diagram:

I know a lot of you like to eat makeup. Making yourself look presentable and beautiful before stepping out the door is a big component of becoming a better person because it helps to build self-confidence and all that other good stuff. But before you grab that new eyeliner or spritz yourself with perfume, check your shizzle here.
YOU NEED TO BOOKMARK THIS PAGE. Try to check everything you have and use with Cosmetics Database if you don’t want to look kooky like Courtney Love on any day:

Cosmetics Database is run by the Environmental Working Group which is a non-profit organization that does a lottttttttt of research on things. You can search for personal care items that you use on a regular basis and see how harmful or not they are to you and your body. If you find that what you’re using is really bad (like, 7 to 10 on their scale with the score in a red circle), you should consider searching for an alternative via more searching through their website! I think the site itself is pretty explanatory. It all goes back to you taking care of yourself first.

To check and see that you guys are holding up your end of the bargain as good readers, post a comment telling me what rating your favorite product (ie: shampoopies, makeups, toothpastes, etc.) got according to Cosmetics Database and what you’re going to do about it (ie: “keep it because it’s great!” or “dump it because I’ma get a tumor on my face!”). I will chose a random winner and send you a nice surprise. =)

(no, it’s not gonna be Andy’s or Justin’s cockadoodles in a box…)

Last week’s winner was Anon11. Congratz! I’m still working on your 32¢. It’s hard collecting change when you don’t drink soda, you know.

Happy Hunting,

Beans, Beans, the More You Eat…

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Food is essential for all of us for as long as we’re alive and doing what we do. If you have 90 minutes to spare, grab your dinner and plop yourself on the couch to watch The Future of Food on Hulu (for free as long as you create your free account).

I promise there are no scenes that will make you sick, but what you learn will definitely make you think about what you’re putting into your mouth and body. Plus, if ZeBek scared you with Monsanto, this movie will tell you how it all began.
Don’t forget to eat your greens! It makes pooping a lot easier.

Never touch a hippo’s tail:

And 32¢ to whoever can guess what veggie I’m chomping in the pic!

Fake Bamboo-bies?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I saw some chick on the Bart wearing these awesome ninja shoes while cuddling with her bike.
Then LYNettey tells me she bought some neato shoes that give her ninja running power.
I trust her with my life, and I needed some new shoes that fit, so I got ‘em too! Thanks LYNettey!

So far these shoes are DOPE!
Okay, truth is I had to get this style w/ the top of my feet exposed because i’m too impatient with getting my toes into the other style with top mesh. I quit after trying for 5 min. The ones i’m wearing are easy to put on. They make me want to climb trees like Huckleberry and buildings like Spider-Man!

Now to tell you a wee bit more about LYNettey-
I met her years and years ago at a party in my apt. I cant tell you the full story online, so ask in person… but lets just say this girl is hilarious and SMART with a big heart!
LYNettey is a Berkeley ’09 alumn. She has a B.S. in Conservation and Resource Studies, Society and Environment. She knows about bugs and life and food, oh yeah and she can knit some crazy ish!
see, its a fish!

I’d like to officially welcome her to the iSg crew.

with love,
ZeBek:.

I now present to you- LYNettey!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is our friend. Their mission is to protect consumers like us and make sure companies don’t lie to us. So last week, when the FTC began defining words like “recyclable” and “biodegradable” for products, they laid a big smackdown on companies labeling and advertising clothing and other fabric products as “BAMBOO” – you know, the thing pandas eat:

The FTC pulled a Sherlock Holmes: after numerous investigations, they found out that “bamboo” fibers are actually rayon. I know you all have clothes and stuff made out of rayon, and that’s okay. Just try to stay away from it now since rayon is very harmful for the environment.

When the FTC says something, they mean business. They sent letters to 78 clothing retailers.
iSg believes that real bamboo-bies are better than fake ones. Happy shopping, and remember to always pay attention to those labels!
